Mouse-over macro and my thoughts on healing~

Ahh! Everyones dieing, BLAME THE HEALER!
Sound familiar? Well from what I have seen in beta we should expect to see a lot more of this in the future. From what I have experienced as a tank(trying to do anything just to live) and from listening to my friends who have played healers in beta so far, healing in this game is tough. Before coming to Rift I played World of Warcraft for many years and spent most of my time on World of Warcraft healing. I am a healer at heart even though I will probably be playing a warrior at launch. I know that personally something I would never want to heal without is something called a Mouse-Over macro.

What is a Mouse-Over macro? A Mouse-Over macro is a macro where instead of having to (target someone, click a heal, target someone else, click another heal, target previous person, click another heal) you can set up a macro to remove the targeting steps while healing. This will make your life much easier when healing. All you have to do is have your mouse over the portrait of another character (or your own) and then click your heal and it will heal the person with that heal that you used that you had your cursor over top of. This can sound kind of confusing so I took a few screenshots, unfortunately I wasn't thinking that the game wouldn't take a screenshot of my mouse so I had to go into Paint and draw a bad cursor on each of the pictures.
Here are two pictures which will hopefully give you an idea of what I am talking about with mouse-over macros.
See how in the picture I have my badly drawn cursor over my characters portrait while I have the enemy targeted? If I did this and now clicked 5 I would heal myself without ever having to target myself.
In this picture I have my badly drawn cursor over my pets portrait while having the enemy targeted, now if I click 5, my heal it will heal my pet even though I don't have it targeted I just have my cursor over it.

Because of this I don't have to waste time clicking and I can keep any boss or enemy I want targeted to either cast spells at or watch what they are casting so that I can react to what they are using against me.

How do I set it up? You set it up by unfortunately making a macro for each one of your heals. You set up a macro by typing /macro which will open up a menu with an option to create a new macro. You can leave the picture as a question mark and name the macros whatever you want. You will be leaving the picture as a question mark because the macro is set up so that it will show the picture of the heal you have the macro set up with. Here is an example of what it should look like and what you should be typing for each heal.
Sorry that the picture is kind of big, I wanted to make sure it was big enough for everyone to read the text. For my macros I set the name as nothing because I can clearly see by the pictures which heal I will be casting but some of you might want to name them just to keep track of them all.
In the command box you should be typing.

#show (Name of the Heal)
stopcasting
cast @mouseover (Name of the Heal)

Then when you are done hit save and drag your new macro down onto your bars and you should have a working Mouse-Over cast for your healing spells =) They don't take very long to set up and they are very useful. When you don't have your cursor over top of anyones portraits you will just heal yourself just like if you were to use a heal with no one targeted or an enemy targeted.

I'm really looking forward to testing out healing in beta 7, especially in pvp. I made a build for myself that includes two self shields and lots of instant cast heals and heals over time so that I shouldn't have to be stationary for very long if ever. If I like healing enough I might make a cleric upon release instead of a warrior I'm not to sure yet, I love healing but I've been healing WoW raids since the start of BC and I'm thinking of trying something new with Rift so that I don't burn myself out playing something familiar to what I have been doing already for the past 4-5 years. Anyways I hope to see you all when beta 7 comes back up, for all who haven't heard yet beta 7 is supposed to be up February 15th to the 21st. The new level cap will be 42.

Hope this helped,

Miku~

  2. Hi there, great post thanks :) Does this work mousing over the person's name on the raid frame too?

  3. Unfortunately I didn't get to test with raid frames but even so I'm 90% sure that it will work with raid frames as well, once beta comes back up I'll test just to make sure though.

  4. Yes it works the same with raid frames .. nice work Miku

  5. It may also help to add an 'oh-s***' macro targeting the tank. /Focus [name of tank] before an instance starts, and then use @focus in your macro - so you have a tank-specific macro button, useful for panicking ;)

  6. Nice one. I'm definitely going to give this a go on any healers that I roll, and I posted this to my guild forums too.

  7. My complete post ( if you had read it ) also included a way to bind a mouseclick to a key. Hence, when I click on a RAID PORTRAIT ( not a character in game ) I heal them. SHIFT-Click = regenerate etc...

    But ye, nice stealing :)

  8. I'm sorry you feel that I was stealing it from you =|, and my guide isn't about key bindings it's about mouse-over healing.

  11. will the icon for the macro still reflect the cooldown of the ability or is this lost?

    ReplyDelete
  12. The icon for the macro will still show the cooldown of the ability as long as the macro. Unfortunately there is a bug, or was not sure if it has been fixed yet(haven't been playing my clierc) where after you learned new skills, it would stop showing the cooldown. The only way I knew how to fix it was to remake the whole macro which is/was annoying and hopefully it gets fixed soon, if it hasn't been already. =3

  13. How can i set up marcos to mouse buttons to cast a diff spell on mouse over

  14. You can set up your mouse buttons to certain buttons on the ability bar by going into the key bindings setting and adding your mouse button to one of the ways to use one of the buttons on your ability bar. Add the macro to that button and then you will have a mouse over cast macro that works with mouse buttons.

  15. Stephen, one can use modifiers to cast using brackets, without quotes, "cast [modifier key] spell name" for example:

    #show spell-1
    stopcasting
    cast [ctrl] @mouseover spell-1
    cast [ctrl] spell-1
    cast [alt] @mouseover spell-2
    cast [alt] spell-2
    cast @mouseover spell-3
    cast spell-3

Substituting your own spells for spell-# and using both @mouseover and without will ensure that your spell will land no matter if you click or mouseover your target.

  16. In your original post you say you "click 5" while mouse overing a portrait. How can you click the box while your cursor is on top of the character?

    Did you mean "type"?

OK, I know that this is a dumb question, but I had to ask it :p

  17. Haha, I meant push number 5 on your keyboard.

  18. Great post, tried the macros yesterday and they worked like a charm. However, i tried making a macro with 2 spells..an "oh shit"- button with Touch of the light and another heal together and I couldnt get it to work. Any Ideas?
Also, the stopcasting inbetween the #show and the heal can also interupt your heal if u press the next heal too early. This ofcourse happens at the worst possible time as u are spamming to keep someone alive. Is the "stopcasting" necessary for the macro to work properly?

  19. You do not need the stopcasting part of the macro, it's only there because sometimes you'll be in the middle casting something else and someone will be dieing and you'll want to start casting the heal right away so if you click it, it will stop casting the other spell and cast the heal. If you spam a lot though take out the stopcasting part. Also you can't add two spells to the same macro in rift because people were sort of abusing it in beta by making certain macros where they could pretty much just push one button and never need another button ever again. (I'm talking about you Bards!)

  20. well i dont think that is true no more...

  21. is it possible to make a macro that works on the raid party instead of needing to figure out in the mob of people whos health bar is whos

  22. Along with some mouse over macros, I made a small utility to enable the use of the left and right mouse buttons while over your raid frames, until addons are enabled in Rift. Need some beta testers and such but its available with source code as well, at http://www.divinitiesbane.com/?page=rift

  23. without macros game will be incomplete because it is necessary in simplifying many aspects of the game.

  24. Thank you for this - it is very useful.

  26. I was in total despair when I found Dr. Todd. My life was going terrible and I didn't know if I was coming or going. I had just gone through a rough divorce, wasn't making enough money to sustain me and my children, and my 17 year old son had just gone to jail for the first time. When I talked to him, I immediately found a sense of peace. He was very honest with me and I could feel that. He also told me that everything would be okay. After my work began, things began to change. My bills were all caught up, the relationship I was in became much stronger, I was never FLAT broke, and my son was released from jail earlier than we expected!! I also completely got over the failed marriage and began to move on. And, received a better position at my job which will cause an $800 per month increase!! I felt completely comfortable with the work that was being done because I was always encouraged by Dr. Todd. manifestspellcast@gmail.com is the BEST!!!!
